Recovery of the Convoy Power Cores
New Life as a Max Level ArchmageRecovery of the Convoy Power Cores is the turning-point operation that gives the stranded Convoy a means of defense after a level-1200 Ghul-Feather rips the engine car away from the rest of the train in the Emberblade Fields. Planned by Jasper Trevane and carried out by Saffra, the mission depends on the defensive spells placed on her by Vivisari Vexaria: they make Saffra functionally invulnerable to the monster’s attacks long enough for her to enter the Lounge, remove two reserve cores, and reactivate the aether cannons. The event changes the situation from an approaching monster swarm with no functioning heavy weapons into a crisis the adventurers can at least contest, while also making Saffra’s apprenticeship visible through action rather than declaration.
Causes and Tactical Plan
The recovery becomes necessary because the Convoy has been derailed and physically divided. The Ghul-Feather, an undead creature at level 1200, has torn the engine from the rest of the train, disabling the aether cannons and leaving the remaining carriages exposed in the Emberblade Fields. Monsters are already beginning to gather, with stronger creatures waiting farther away, so the adventurers have little time to develop a safer solution.
Jasper identifies the monster’s behavioral weakness: Ghul-Feathers rely mainly on ranged attacks and are likely to abandon a target they cannot kill. His plan therefore requires a person who can walk directly into danger, take the cores, and leave while the creature’s attacks fail. The plan initially sounds absurd because it appears to demand someone invulnerable to Titled-rank monsters. Jasper then recalls the defensive barriers Vivisari Vexaria placed on Saffra and proposes testing them. His casual confidence contrasts with the older woman’s dry disbelief, turning the impossible requirement into a narrowly available tactical resource.
Testing Saffra’s Defenses
Jasper begins by firing an arrow at Saffra, treating the test as urgent fieldwork rather than a formal examination. The force of the shot is sufficient to turn the arrow into a miniature fireball, yet the defensive barriers remain untouched. The group then tests the protection against magic and other conceivable manifestations of force. Because the Convoy is under immediate threat, the examination lasts only ten minutes, but everyone present reaches the same practical conclusion: Saffra is functionally invulnerable for the duration of Vivisari Vexaria’s spells.
The result is more than physical reassurance. Saffra realizes that she may be effectively immortal even against Titled-rank threats, provided the enchantments continue to hold, while the surrounding danger continues to intensify. Lower-level monsters begin charging the position, and Jasper kills them without effort; higher-level monsters, including some of orichalcum rank, remain in the distance and are expected to attack once they gather enough nerve. The defenses do not remove the danger from the scene, but they give the adventurers one person who can pass through the most exposed route.
Entering the Lounge and Securing the Cores
Jasper directs Saffra to the Lounge, where eight emergency power-core slots are located in the floor. He tells her to take only two of the eight cores, both to limit the weight and to keep the Ghul-Feather focused on the engine car rather than recognizing the full extent of the recovery attempt. Two cores should be enough to power the aether cannons, though Jasper admits that his understanding of the Convoy’s machinery may be incomplete. The admission gives the plan a distinctly improvised quality: its success depends on a mixture of technical instructions, battlefield timing, and Vivisari Vexaria’s excessive caution.
Saffra reaches the engineers, a thin, tall man wearing spectacles and a short, musclebound man whom she privately distinguishes as “Glasses” and “Hairy.” She explains that the Convoy has been separated, that a level-1200 undead Ghul-Feather is responsible, and that the aether cannons must be restored before the monsters overwhelm the train. The engineers are visibly shocked by the creature’s level, especially when its landing on the engine car makes the carriage shake and its pecking produces a deafening gong-like impact. Even so, Glasses gives her precise instructions: rip up the carpet, expose the sockets in the center of the Lounge floor, place the cores, and pull the lever, because the mechanism has no safeties.
Glasses deactivates two power cores and hands them to Saffra. They are heavier than their appearance suggests, nearly slipping from her grasp, but the urgency leaves no room for hesitation. Outside, she reaches the compartment and finds eight slots set into a metal face covered with artificing lines like those in the engine car. As the two inert gray orbs approach, an invisible force pulls them from her hands and locks them into place with heavy thunks. Saffra then seizes the lever and pulls it.
Restoration of Defensive Power
Mana floods through the system. The train shudders as the gray cores turn white and begin humming, sending an enormous quantity of energy through the Convoy. The power is not merely a local illumination or mechanical convenience: it travels through the train’s systems and restores the energy supply needed by the aether cannons. Saffra stares at the brilliant cores, briefly surprised that the final mechanical step has been easier than expected despite the danger surrounding it.
The recovery still costs her something. Exhaustion weighs on her after the cores activate, and she must release the mana sustaining an ice wall, allowing the construct to melt and lowering herself and the White Glove to the floor. The operation therefore ends not in effortless triumph but in a narrow completion followed by physical depletion. Nevertheless, the essential objective has been achieved: the Convoy’s emergency power has been restored, and its principal defensive weapons can function again.
Consequences and Significance
Saffra immediately reports the recovery to Lord Caldimore, identifying the cores as coming from the engine car and explaining that the Ghul-Feather’s attack had disabled the cannons. Lord Caldimore is genuinely shocked both by the monster’s level and by the fact that Saffra retrieved the cores. Her answer makes the event a public confirmation of Vivisari Vexaria’s influence: Vivisari Vexaria’s defensive spells allowed Saffra to walk up to the danger, knock on the engineers’ door, and complete the task while the Ghul-Feather proved unable to harm her.
The operation also alters how Saffra’s role can be understood. She is not merely protected by a powerful absent master; she acts as the person capable of converting that protection into a collective survival measure. Jasper supplies the tactical insight, the engineers supply the procedural knowledge, and Saffra supplies the body that can cross the monster’s killing ground. Their contributions are distinct, but the cores are recovered only when all three forms of competence meet.
At the level of scene structure, the event moves the central value from near-total defensive helplessness toward renewed possibility. The Convoy begins with its engine separated, its aether cannons silent, and monsters gathering; it ends with the power cores glowing white and mana surging through the train. The reversal is deliberately concrete rather than rhetorical: a gray orb becomes a bright source of power, and a stranded convoy regains the weaponry needed to resist the swarm. Saffra’s success thus serves simultaneously as an emergency repair, a demonstration of Vivisari Vexaria’s foresight, and a decisive step in Saffra’s emergence as an operative who can carry responsibility under battlefield conditions.
